The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. “一天早晨，李美凌从不安的睡梦中醒来，发现自己躺在床上变成了一只巨大的红色熊猫。”借远古传说对传统中式乃至东亚式家庭关系的探讨终究过于浅显，反倒是与幻想无关的那段关于月经的描述才更具现实的冲击力。
表面中国风其实是日本风的全面胜利，内容毫无深度
每个女孩子都有自己的红熊猫（red panda），永远不要封印我们的红熊猫。
东亚文化语境的故事讲述了最普世的情感共情，但有关青春与成长的内核只是中国版的《勇敢传说》和加长版的《包宝宝》。在当今的好莱坞，女性少数族裔的主创团队在出发点就领先了一个身位，何况小熊猫比熊要可爱的多了。
2.5 这算不算华人的刻板印象？
无限放大的的夸张与萌，少女心爆棚的爆笑电影。国外华裔。中国风建筑音乐美食。两代人的母女情。02年Teen Pop。
东亚女性好像都是被这样训导着长大的，要乖巧孝顺，要优秀懂事。红熊猫像是每一个女孩子内心那个不那么符合这一切标准的自己，即使明明是自己的一部分，但因为不完美，仍然被家人、社会教导着应该把她封印起来。外婆是这么做的，也是这样教导妈妈的。妈妈是这么做的，也是这么期望美林的。但好在美林终于可以和拥抱那个不完美不合规矩的自己了，就连妈妈也可以和自己和解了，真好。女孩子们就是要放下条条框框，拥抱自己啊。
真的幽默十足，喜欢男团、喜欢男神的中二街头黑怕女孩，还有毛茸茸巨萌的大红猫咪。
华味儿确实很重，但是是刻板印象的华味儿，知道什么是真实华味儿吗，就没有父亲这个角色，或者在发现女儿叛逆之后对妈妈说：看，这就是你教出来的好女儿！
自卑敏感，羞于见人，暴躁而极具破坏力，性意识觉醒，红色对应着月经，其实变身就是一个青春期隐喻。而渡过青春期的秘诀正是这样两点，朋友，和接受自己。靠朋友维持情绪正常，也只有找到自己的优点和与人交往的方式，才能获得更多朋友。
这种从设定、代入、价值观到思想性都如此不适的鬼东西竟然能有8.0，为了tm追星和她妈打成这样？中国母女关系什么时候是这样？和解nmb，什么78鬼东西
迪士尼狗公司不做人，这么好的动画，居然不放院线走流媒体。希望能拿明年的奥斯卡最佳动画长片。看预告就知道是我喜欢的，没想到正片如此精彩！对中国式母女关系做了一场生动的展示，看完真的只想到处安利！
单独看Asian American的故事还是可以的，但是故事本身还是个皮克斯经典故事内核套了个异域文化壳子的电影……没啥新意也没有很感人。。
