The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 到了我这个年纪，生活太苦，糟心事儿太多了，只想轻轻松松的看点不费脑子，能傻乐呵的剧情。假么？是挺假。希望能有这样的事儿发生么？也是真的希望。所以有人拍出来给我看，就挺开心的了。而且冲着Mark和Luke来看，结果小黑好帅啊！

这个同人里写遍的梗第一次拍到电影里也是很有意思，剧情老套，内容肤浅，但圣诞当头的我确实只想看这种不需要脑子的欢乐合家欢电影。备受诟病的家里人掺合了太多主角的爱情选择这点确实很减分，两个小女孩的过度磕cp有点烦了，国外或许还好但是国内近期好几起事件都导致人们有些过分敏感苛刻。以及电影里其实没有特别好的表现出有真感情的假男朋友最精彩的部分，小说中可以很轻松的动用心理描写写出两个人的互相试探小心翼翼，用假男朋友为理由约对方心中仍有的一丝期待试探，同意假扮男朋友的对方心中的苦涩沉重和爱慕，这里的fake boyfriend更像是个吸引人的噱头......不过高潮部分的男主终于明白心意转头去追的部分还是不错的，虽然素质可能不达标但是这口工业糖精我吃的很爽，四星吧！

又是那种“我喜欢我最好的朋友但是不敢表白怕以后分手了连朋友都做不了”的套路，只是gay版而已。怎么gay们找对象都这么容易，有一个这么包容、充满爱的大家庭真的很难得。看来爱情这种东西有时候真的得靠别人push一下才能成。
合格的节日专配爆米花电影🍿️。演员选得很合适，也很有爱，温馨浪漫。
